Modesto is the worst place I've visited a few nights for family funeral. I stayed central in the Hilton hired a car at San Fran. Driving along the streets downtown Modesto there were zombies pushing shopping trolleys along the middle of the road with there belongings. They're called Tweakers crystal meth addicts, later found out watching a documentary that the area is the largest crystal meth houses manufacturing area in USA from Fresno to Modesto.
Loads of wronguns moved out there from the bay area Oakland was murder capital in US when there. Crime was very high logged into the police app many times when in the hotel and there were shooters incidents everywhere in surrounding streets, never felt safe, couldn't wait to leave.

Castleton near Rochdale, luckily I was only there for a day. Highlight was going past the old Embassy Rooms in a taxi.

Wakefield was a shit hole but Barry Island is without a doubt the biggest shit hole of them all….. even worst than Canvey Island full of Canning towners on a bank holiday weekend.

Another vote for Preston. Took a train to Preston, en route to Lytham St Annes
Preston is seismic in its shitness, whereas Lytham wasn’t too bad

I once went to a Preston suburb to see a star turn in a local social centre. Every person in the place was an absolute deviant. Enlivened the dour shit hole and genuinely made it a memory to cherish.

Hull which has a two storey poundland is somewhat grim.
In the late 80s i got stranded in downtown Redwood city not far from San Francisco
My cousins hire car broke down and we had to stay overnight
everywhere was boarded up and full of zonked out weirdos & the fleapit we stayed in was full of them too.
I just googled the place and it appears there has been some regeneration and several tech companies moved in but i wouldnt be in a rush to return.

Stayed in Bury one night many years ago. Never again. Same for a place called Roxaul, some distance away.

Kearsley near Bolton was fucking horrible. I did have to stay in Middlesborough for work, the hotel was opposite one of those dodgy sex shops. Was amusing to watch the punters going in and out. I also hated staying in Dundee although the locals amused me.

Went up to Marske to watch a football match and was looking for a place to have lunch and ended up in Redcar which like Mashed said is fooking dire, so we didn't bother and run the risk of salmonella poisoning!

Thankfully, I managed to stay elsewhere, at Rosebank, on the Clyde. That wasn't so bad, IIRC
